December 2015 Christmas Party

What a Party !

With Christmas at our doorstep, it was wonderful to see the crowd of members, both past and present, their friends and visitors who came to our club night. With a much smaller membership than in past years, it was incredible to have well over 50 people at our Christmas Party, both a formal meeting and our Christmas Gift Exchange night.  As well, we raffled off the Christmas Bureau's Income Tax Receipt.  To that end alone, a very big thanks to Jennifer and Santa A.K.A. Iain who sold the tickets and ran the draws.

The PSCer, their friends, and the locals who dropped in at our club night raised another $120.00.  With the addition of three gifts which were brought along and the money raised on our annual Christmas Pub Crawl, the total is now over $300.00 - $318.00 to be exact!

Congratulations to Michael Webster, the winner of the tax receipt.  We took the gifts and cash down on Friday, December 18th and these donations will certainly help in granting some unfortunate children a little cheer this Christmas.  Great job.

Santa brought along his list, and the first 15 members who came by (and this was reached well before the meeting's 7pm start) were each handed their free gift.  As the night went along, well over 38 guests joined in the gift exchange.  Once the trading ended, each guest was called up and Santa handed them another wrapped gift.  Again we were permitted to exchange these unopened gifts.  Then, as the Whistler 2010 Olympic bell was rung, everyone opened up their gifts.  Lots of fun, lots of new friends made and several new members were welcomed into our club.  The demand for raffle tickets was so high, we ran out of tickets.  Thanks also to Roger, from the I.E. club who was our sound man and helped out with the technical stuff every meeting needs.  Santa handed him a gift for being sooo good.

Christmas Party Gift Exchange !!!

December 17th, Toby's Pub 2733 Commercial

Come join the members of the Pacific Ski Club at our club night
with a 7:00pm start to festivities.  First 15 people who come on upstairs to our Executive Table will get a free gift from Santa.  Don't open it until after the Announcements.  Those who come by later will have a chance to buy a gift and get in the game as well.  During the evening, you can exchange your gift with that of others until we 'ring the bell' and trading stops.  At that point, everyone will open the 'gift' they hold and we will open up the second part of "Santa's Sack of gifts.  You will be told what to do next at the party.

==============================================
Christmas Raffles:
As it is Christmas time, we will be having a few more prizes to hand out to members and their guests.  Come by, have a great party and have lots of fun while enjoying good company.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
 Bonus Draw:
Thanks to all of you who came out to support the Christmas Bureau of Vancouver on our Annual Christmas Pub Crawl.  We collected a whopping $156.89, bought 24 gifts for needy children and brought these to the depot on East Pandora as we have for years.  Job well done!!!!!
As a result, we will raffle off the Income Tax Receipt at tomorrows club night as well.  Every penny from this draw will also go to the same cause.  So, if you could not make the pub crawl, there is still a chance for you to do some good before Christmas.
 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Merry Christmas, and hope to see you all there December 17th @ 7pm onward !

My first Merry Christmas Blog

Not one of our members would be reading this blog, my first, had it not been for the many hours of work Shannon Chadwick has put in working on our web site, posting my other 'blogs' and then granting us time, with this new executive, to teach us the basics of Blogging and then publishing this on our web site.  I can only hope I passed blogging 101 and that you will see this posted on our web pages.
To one and all, I invite you to our Christmas Party, December 17 at Toby's Bar, where the first 15 members (and their guests) who show up will be handed a free 'present' from Santa.  Anyone showing up after that will still be able to get in on the gift exchange.  You can purchase a gift from Santa's sack until all of the gifts are gone. You will be able to exchange this wrapped gift until the bell tolls, then it will be time to open your gift. There will be more fun added on to the game at this point.

Bonus Raffle: The club will be raffling off the $156.89 Income Tax Receipt for the gifts we collected at our annual Christmas Pub Crawl.

More Prizes:  As it is our Christmas Party, we will have a  number of other gifts to raffle off.  A 3 tierd serving platter, a food/gift basket, a Koknaee Cap, and wine.  There could be more gifts, it all depends on how good you all are.

Christmas Message

President’s Christmas Message;
First of all, a very Merry Christmas to one and all!
Again, many thanks to each and everyone who donated to the Christmas Bureau on our Christmas Pub Crawl.  Anyone who did not make it, we will be adding to the $156.89 as we will raffle off the Income Tax receipt for that amount at our Club Christmas Party December 17th.  We will also have a few more things to raffle, a great 3-tiered serving platter, a party/food basket, a Kokanee hat and more.
Meeting starts at 7pm for cocktails and drinks and gift exchange, so come on down.  Not sure if Santa will appear, but there could be some presents for those who were good, we will have to wait and see.
Still a few days left to book onto the New Years Trip to Sun Peaks, but you’ll have to let me know ASAP.  All rooms not used by the 17th will be handed back.
It was great to see 3 PSC members on the ski trip to Whistler and the Tantalus Lodge.  Great fun, blue skies (one day) 20 and 50 centimeters the other days.  You just cannot lose on ski days like that.  Many a good turn was executed on the runs, lots of white fluff all over, great apr├Ęs skiing at the Long Horn and a Pot Luck on Saturday.  Whistler even hosted its 50 Years of Operations Party at the conference centre.  Anyone see Walter? Congratulations to Shannon on her birthday as well! Hope to see you on the other trips organized by Victoria, OK and Pacific this season!
Wax your boards, open your presents, and use that new ski equipment Santa brings in the months to come.  See you on the slopes.

Greens and Regulations PSC Golf Tournament

The PSC annual Golf Tournament was again held at Mylora and what a gorgeous day awaited all of us.  Sun shine, blue skies, cold beer and ciders on the course; good friends.  What more could a golfer want (a straight shot or two? a long putt?).

17 keen golfers, all wide eyed and busy tailed, especially Peter who ordered a Bloody Mary as he stepped out of his car (not sure why as I was at the Baseball wind up party and he 'looked' fairly good when I left), arrived and bought their Mulligans and teed off.  5 foursomes in all (can't do my math that well, okay!) took to the course, hitting balls hither and thither (except Graham - more on that later, I am afraid) and flagged down the beer lady whenever we required a cold one.

Bruce hit the most ball into the lake
Joel Metcalfe won the Men's Longest Drive and the new Mens' and Lady's Farthest from the pin holes.
Brenda West won the Lady's Longest Drive.
Esther Mason took the Lady's Closest to the Pin.
Greg Palm took that event for the men.

Greens - There were two players who landed on 3 greens from their drive, both Shannon Chadwick and Joel Metcalfe, but as Shannon birdied one, the award went to Shannon.  Good shots to all that hit a green from their drive:  Anna, Reha, Stephanie, Bruce, Graham, Greg, Brenda.

You'll have noticed, I was not among those who hit a GREEN.  I could not even get one ball in 18 holes to land on a fairway.  13 tee shots hooked to the left, 5 sliced to the right.  I found that my golf also went from bad to not so bad after 3 beers, but after the 4th, on the front 9, it did not seem to improve my game any more.  yet, Larry, once he found out 'Happy Hour' had arrived, bought us all one more on the 10th.  It must have worked, as I did not lose a single ball to the water.

I learned on thing on this tournament.  After 18 holes, a few beer, and then more at the BBQ, if you decide to add up the scores ( I did not and trusted each group to do that for me) and then tally it up to make some sense of it all for the presentation, the 'poor lighting under the tents' must be at falt with my eyesight that late into the evening.  AS it was, a 73 was taken for an 83, and thus the official results were not quite as they ought to have been presented that night.  Yet, in my favour on this oversight, there were 4 players in the winning group, but not one single whiner. They had counted the strokes, had it proofed by an accountant (CA) and let me go on and on at the podium and announce the winners, all without one word of caution.  Only after everyone had left, and there were only one of two still drinking, was my error pointed out.

The Official Winners
Lowest score: Richard - 80
Second lowest score - Joel and Bruce - 81 each

Best overall player, Graham West

(we have a very special trophy that is USUALLY not won each year by having the best score, but this year it must go to Graham West for being such a good sport while I made a fool of myself) - 73!!!!

President’s Blog - August 2015

With the ‘Dog Days of Summer’ almost behind us, we find ourselves in the beginning of August.  I have not been around much, unless you happened to be in Venice, Prague, Budapest, Vienna or Bratislava, yet I do take our club most seriously.

This Saturday, August 8th, Joel, Anna and Peter are running the annual PSC Car Rally.  With a smaller club, we are going to concentrate on Skiing and ski trips with the Victoria Alpine Club, but with the few activities we are holding ourselves, it is most important that you, as members, come on out and support these guys.  If you haven’t already called and booked, make sure you include yourself in this fun event.  The more people in any given car, the more fun you will have.  Bring a friend or two, and show them what fun our club is, but please support those who take the effort to make our club run.

“ Where will you go? It's a mystery, so get out your detective minds and come out for some fun times and maybe an adventure or two.”  Pacific Ski Club Newsletter.

At the end of August, the annual Labour Day Camping weekend will be held.
August 4, 5, & 6, 2015

Anyone who has ever been to the OK Olympics over the past 35 to 40 years will know it all started out as a small group who wanted to simply go out into the wilderness, camp, play music, drink good wine and beer, and have fun.  It was so much fun it ran for over 3 decades.  This year, I can promise you we will still have lots of great times, yet it will be much closer to home.  No 5 to 6 ½ hour drive up.  Just a short ride up into the wild Fraser Canyon.  Tent sites, RV sites, Motor Home hook ups and cabins are all available.  There are also canoe rentals.

As this is a pay as you go camping weekend, with no loss to any of our ski clubs.  Each person, or group, unless you are going for the lodge, must contact the Blue Lake Resort itself and pay for their spot.  This is a great way to get together as a group of friends from more than one club, as we have done for years.  They even have an amphitheater with a stage for John Francis and friends (or is that fiends) to play on.

Give the site a look.  Everyone is welcome to drive up.  It is about an hour past Hope, but not nearly as far as in the past.

You must call or e-mail the resort directly.  It is a pay as as you go weekend.

Welcome! Since taking over the ski club in March, we have had 6 new members sign up. Come and be a part of it. It is your CLUB!

See you at Toby’s Bar and Grill on the 28th! We will be there from 6 pm on to sign up any renewals, especially those who tried to join but I told them to wait until we were sure of the price(s).

President's Blurb!

Wow!  It was heartwarming to see so many members come by the club meeting Thursday, March 19th. There were more of us than at last month's Special Meeting. Three new members joined up, one old member to renew, and lots of interest in the new event announced, especially the camping trips.

Yes, we will have TWO (2) meeting this May.  Our regular meeting will be held at Toby's, and our AGM will be a week later, Thursday May 28th, 2015.  More info in a week's time.
For you skiers and snowboarders:  Victoria Alpine Club still has one more trip up to Whistler, so if you have left over days on your edge card, now is the time to look at joining them.  Remember: PSC Members can go on any of their trip at the membership rate.  Contact their club executive to book.

Rosland's Red Mountain had a ton of snow dumped on them on March 17th, St. Patrick's Day.  You may want to book yourself into the Highlander Hotel and enjoy some light mountain powder on a trip to some of B.C.'s finest snow!

Thanks to Stephanie for the help at the monthly meeting, and congratulations to Rhea and Bill for winning the prizes!
